Struggling with pet hair and odor indoors? If so, you are in the right place! Pets are sure to brighten the days of many, but like everything else in life, there are some downsides. When we are talking about our furry friends, such as cats and dogs, pet hair and odor removal can be a big problem. If you don’t know how to address it, that is!
According to research done by Forbes Advisor, cleaning up after your dog (the most popular pet choice in the country) was identified as the biggest challenge associated with pet ownership (27%). That result is understandable. Between dirty paws, mishaps when it’s time for them to use their own “bathroom, and the constant need to worry about pet hair and odor removal, cleaning with pets can be quite the challenge!
When it’s time to address the problem, properly dealing with pet hair and odor removal
Despite the need all time need for regular cleanings, right now we have another stressor to make us worry about pet hair and odor removal: the holidays! With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s more than time to address the elephant in the room and get some deep cleaning done.
The good news is, pet hair removal and odor removal (and overall cleaning) can be a perfectly manageable task if you know how to tackle it. And that’s why we are here today! Without further ado, here’s a list of 7 things to do when cleaning with pets, pet hair and odor removal edition!
1. Brush your furry friend regularly

Starting strong, let’s address the problem at its origin! It doesn’t matter if you own cats, dogs, bunnies, or hamsters: if it has hair, it will lose some of it naturally. That’s why grooming your pets regularly will help you to control the hair loss in a way that prevents it from spreading all over your home.
Take some time every day to check on your buddy to groom them. Dedicating that time is probably not a challenge for any pet owner here in Colorado, knowing that our state was pointed out as the state with the most dedicated dog owners!
2. Create a proper indoor airflow

When your house doesn’t have a proper airflow, any smell will become more latent. Therefore, one of the first steps for odor removal when cleaning after your pets is trying to fix your airflow. For that, you need to:
- Open your windows and doors regularly for cross-ventilation and use fans as well to circulate air, especially if your house isn’t very ventilated.
- Keep vents clear of furniture and obstructions.
- Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to push stale air outside.
- Always make sure that your HVAC system is well-maintained by cleaning vents and changing filters regularly.
3. Vacuum every day

A key part of hair removal is vacuuming. After all, you won’t be able to catch everything when grooming your pet. This is when vacuuming comes on! Try to build the practice of doing it every day to prevent the situation from escalating too much.
Even if it’s just 10 minutes that you go around your home’s main areas, that small action will already have a big impact.
4. Deodorize your upholstery

Your upholstery and your carpet are one of the main things to retain odor, especially if your pets spend most of their time indoors. That means you will need to show this area some extra attention for odor removal. For that, you can use a simple product that is probably already in your kitchen: baking soda.
Baking soda is a natural deodoriser and your best friend when it comes to odor removal! It can be quite an effective way to neutralise smells without using harsh chemicals. To use it, sprinkle baking soda over your sofa, focusing on areas that your pet spends most of their time on – aka, the areas with the strongest odours. Leave it for at least 30 minutes (or even overnight) and vacuum afterwards.
If your pet sleeps with you, do the same thing for your mattress as frequently as you may need. If the problem persists, maybe it’s time to call in the professionals to help you out.
5. Clean their toilet spaces every day

Your dog’s newspaper corner? Gotta take care of that every day. Your cat’s sandbox? Needs daily cleaning. Doing this simple thing will already help a lot when it comes to controlling odors. If you live in a house or in an apartment with a balcony, consider placing your pet’s bathroom in the open so that the air flow can help dissipate odors.
6. Use washable beddings for your pets

Another tip to make your life easier with pet hair and odor removal is choosing washable bedding for your pets. Extra points if they can go into the washing machine! Just don’t forget to vacuum to work on the pet hair removal first, so that you don’t end up with too much fur on your machine. For that, you can vacuum the bedding first or try to manually remove some of the hair with a lint roller.
7. Clean your house weekly and deep clean when needed
